Five weeks old

Mattie's babies five weeks old. She did a wonderful job considering this was her first litter. A week later they all went to their new homes and Mattie is getting a well reserved rest.

At four weeks the babies are putting on weight and growing. The are also camera shy.

At three weeks the babies have just opened their eyes. They have much more fur on their face and body. They are as cute as a button.

Mattie's Babies at Two Weeks

At two weeks the eyes are still closed. The face is starting to sprout a few hairs while the body is sill pink and hairless.

It's now been a week and a half since Mattie had her three babies. You have to start holding baby hedgehogs way before there weaned if you want them to be use to people so today I start holding the little ones. I only held them briefly since this was there first time being held. These four pictures are of the same baby.

On April 11th Mattie had three babies. She seemed to be a good mother. She was very protective. The first few nights she would move her food dish in front of the entrance to the nest box. On the second day I found her eating and took the opportunity to get a picture of the babies.

Hedgehog Breeding/Weighing In

It's been about six weeks since I weighed the hedgehogs before getting them ready to breed. We will follow Mattie who will be a first time mom. Mattie is a beautiful salt and pepper pinto. She is a big girl at about 20 oz. As you can see from the pictures she wanted nothing to do with staying put. You get real fast at reading the numbers before there out of there.

Hedgehogs and Winter

Remember hedgehogs don't do well in temperatures lower then 72 degrees. Make sure your hedgehogs are kept warm by using ceramic heat lamps, nocturnal light bulbs or micro heat disc. Fleece in their nest box is also appreciated.

Hello,
I can't wait to share the fun and excitement of the new litters this spring. I will post pictures of their development as they develope into cute little hedgies . Hope to have some pictures up by March so check back soon.
